Aquabike?? any pedalos involved?

Aquabike what is it and are there any pedalos involved.

Aquabike is be the perfect low-impact option for people who can't, or won't, run so if you are new to multisport events and think a triathlon is too daunting? Or can't run through injury, or an aversion of that part of a triathlon? Then why not try an Aquabike it may be just the challenge you are looking for.

Yes that's right a Swim followed by a cycle. The Aquabike and Triathlon will start together in the pool and then followed by a cycle but then unlike the triathletes no running!

The aquabike scene was first introduced in 2005 in the USA as a pilot programme and proved popular with people who found, that for whatever reason, running was not suited to them. The sport is still popular today with events nationwide.

I decided to run this race after an injury stoped me running for nearly a year. I could swim and cycle ok so still entered races but had DNF (Did Not Finish) next to my results as i did not go out on the run. I thought this unfair but found Aquabikes almost non existant outside of the USA and now hope more events will include them.

See the Race Instructions for information on what to do on race day and no pedalos as that would be classed as an unfair advantage.

Aquabike was created in 2005 as a way to increase participation in athletes who suffered knee and hip injuries by eliminating the run portion of the event. Many long course triathlon events embraced this style of competition by hosting a 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike. The multisport world was surprised to find that not only were athletes with trouble running competing, but so were a new crop of participants, as this distance allowed
them the endurance of a long course event without the pounding on the joints caused by the 13.1 miles (the run portion of long course triathlons).

As the median age of BTF members gets older, the organization anticipates even more participants looking for competitive events that can help save some of their joints.

My personal vision is that more event organisers will take this on and make the sport of Aquabike run hand in hand with Triathalon.
